Bianca couldn’t help but huff as they walked out of Adam’s office. Her ego had been a little bruised by his parting statements, which made her all the more indignant.

“Can you believe the nerve of that guy?” she said to Alison, blowing her hair out of her face. “You try and do a little good somewhere, and look at the thanks you get.” Bianca shook her head and waved her hands in frustration as she spoke.

Alison smiled at Bianca’s display of righteous fury. “Ok, Bianca. Deep breath. You can’t let these people get under your skin. You’ll never last here if you do.”

Bianca rolled her eyes and groaned.

Alison laughed. “Let’s take your mind off things. We were headed for the diner, right? Would that cheer you up?”

“Maybe,” Bianca said reluctantly, after a pause. She smiled despite herself.

The diner was only a couple blocks away. By the time the waiter had taken their orders, Bianca’s rage at Adam was starting to subside.

“I haven’t been to a place like this in ages,” Bianca said, taking a sip from her water. “I remember I used to go to a diner just like this back–” She stopped herself short. She shouldn’t have said that.

“Back where?” Alison asked, thanking the waiter as he brought their food to the table.

Bianca stumbled for an answer. Being in witness protection would take some getting used to. How was she supposed to keep her story straight?

“Oh, just back in the day,” Bianca said, waving her hand. “When I was a kid, you know. Ancient history. Nothing you would care about.”

Alison laughed. “What, were you a spy or something? Little miss secretive, I see,” she said, continuing to giggle.

Bianca returned her laugh nervously. “Oh, no, nothing like that. Every little town has a diner like this. It just brings back memories,” she said, hoping to remain vague until she could shift the topic of the conversation.

“So I’ve been meaning to ask,” Alison said, finishing a bite of her sandwich. “How did you and Elijah meet? And why alpacas?”

Bianca sputtered over her burger. She hadn’t really had time to practice her cover story much since she had moved to Oak Knoll.

“Well, you know, with the alpacas, it’s a funny thing…I can’t even really say where it started…Elijah and I–” She tripped over her words. Alison stared at her expectantly.

Suddenly, they heard the door slam open. Bianca had never been happier for an interruption. She tried to conceal her sigh of relief.

Alison’s eyes went wide as she saw who had just stormed into the diner. Bianca started to turn around, but Alison grabbed her arms quickly to stop her.

“Don’t look now, but Pauline just walked in. And she looks like she’s on the warpath. I wonder who she’s after now?”

They turned to follow Pauline as she stormed through the diner, stopping at the corner booth. “Henry! You have got some nerve!” Pauline was shouting loud enough for the whole diner to be privy to her conversation.

“Who is Henry?” Bianca whispered to Alison as she lifted her coffee cup.
